Although we said that we would choose a city or town in the UK, we received so many beautiful photos from all over Essex County UK we decided to showcase this region.

Essex County offers a wide variety of sites and attractions including rural, cultural and marine attractions. Due to the rich history of the region, there are a number of historical sites to see in Essex.

• Roman Remains
  • Colchester, Britain's oldest recorded town, surrounding much of the centre is the oldest wall of its kind in Britain. The foundations of the Temple of Claudius can still be seen below the castle.
  • Roman settlements have also been found beneath towns such as: the recently excavated Romano-British town at Heybridge, Maldon, Chelmsford, Braintree and Great Dunmow
• Castles, Churches and Buildings
  • Norman castle at Hedingham for exquisite Norman architecture

  • Waltham Abbey is a Norman Abbey founded in 1060 by King Harold

History of Essex UK
Since pre-Roman Britain the land now known as Essex was inhabited by a tribe known as the Trinovantes. This region grew wealthy by conducting intensive trades with the Roman Empire. When the Romans invaded Britain, this region was the first to be occupied by the Romans. The town of Camulodunum, (Known today as the Essex town of Colchester) became the capital of provincial Britannia. Camulodunum was attacked and destroyed in 61 AD. Sometime after its destruction, London was established as the new capital of Britannia. Essex was established in the early Middle Ages as the eastern kingdom of the Saxons. Its name originates from old English meaning “East Saxons”. The Kingdom of Essex was traditionally founded in 527 AD by Æscwine (also known as Aescwine, Erkenwine, or Erchenwine). The independent Kingdom eventually merged with the Kingdom of England and Essex became known as a shire. Essex County Council was formed in 1889.

Facts about Essex

• Essex County's coat of arms comprises three Saxon knives (seax) arranged on a red background
• The traditional county flower of Essex is the cowslip (Primula veris) but after a census the residents named the Common Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) the county wildflower.
